Leading Indicators Shows Further Expansion
The Conference Board's Leading Economic Index increased 0.4% in January, down from 0.5% in December. That is the fourth consecutive increase in the leading indicators data. The Briefing.com consensus expected the leading indicators index to increase 0.5%.
Since eight of 10 components are known prior to the release, the difference between the consensus and actual data is typically minor and generally comes from the two estimated components: manufacturer orders of nondefense capital goods excluding aircraft and manufacturer orders of consumer goods.
Those two categories contributed -0.1 percentage points to the Leading Economic Index, the exact difference between the consensus forecast and the actual result.
